1)  Find a paper in the current (2002-= 2004) Inorganic Chemistry literature that includes an X-ray crystallographic analysis.  Include the citatio= n for your paper (with the manuscript title etc.).  Your paper can not be one we discu= ssed in class.  Answer the following questions concerning the X-ray crystallography in your manuscript.  (40 points)

A)  What is the crystal system of the crystal analyzed (i.e. triclinic, monoclinic, etc.) and what is the space group (i.e. P21/c, P1, etc.)? 

B)  What type of information is provided by the assignment of a crystal system and how does that vary from the information conveyed by the assignme= nt of a space group?

C)  Describe what is meant by the term unit cell and describe how it rel= ates to the bulk structure of the solid analyzed.

D)  Often x-ray crystallographic analyses are done at low temperature.  What advantages are provided by us= ing low temperatures to perform an x-ray crystallographic analysis?

 

2)   Organom= etallic complexes are often said to adhere to the 18 electron rule.  What is the 18 electron rule and w= hy is 18 a desirable number of valence electrons?  (10 points)

 

3)  Give the valence electron count fo= r the following species.  Show your work.  (20 points)<= /span>

4)  The reaction of cis-[Pd(PPh3)2= (CH3)2] with CH3I affords C2H6 and trans-[Pd(PPh3)2(CH3)I].  Provide a step by step mechanism t= hat is consistent with this reaction.  For each step describe the nature of the reaction.  For each metal complex provide the coordination number, oxidation number and electron count to illustrate how these properties change over the course of your reaction scheme.  (30 points)
