The Personal Tutor Mode
A. The Homework BookShelf
To understand how this mode would work, I would ask you to imagine a situation
in which a Personal Tutor is sitting behind a student who is working on homework- or textbook problems.
The student would first go to the Homework BookShelf and select the problem set and the problem to be solved. The two problems
(Qktour #2.3 and 3.31) selected here correspond to the density calculation and
mole conversion problems worked on earlier.
The Homework BookShelf window contains some additional information that may be useful to the student
working on the problem.
- The type of problem:
- Unit conversions
- Density calculations
- Mole conversions
- Reaction
and solution stoichiometry
- Solution preparation
- Gas law problems
- Correct answer tolerance: (The default is 1%)
- Should the correct answer include a non-unit label?
(The answer to Qktour #3.31, for example, must also include a non-unit label.)
B. The Problem Solving WorkPad
Clicking on the Solve button takes the student to the Problem Solving WorkPad.
The area to the left of the equal sign is reserved for the display of the
solution (in factor-label format). The student would place the answer in the cell
to the right of the equal sign.
(Note: Both the solution and answer areas contain two cells; the right-hand cell is
reserved for the placement of the non-unit label required in the answer to this
problem.)
The student may receive two kinds of help from the Personal Tutor:
- The Personal Tutor could check the student's answer.
See some examples for the student working on Qktour problem #2.3 and 3.31.
- The Personal Tutor could show the student how to set up the solution step by step.
See some examples for the student working on Qktour problem #2.3 and 3.31.
The student can also have the Personal Tutor check their progress with the Learning Curve Monitor.
