Week 11, Question for Dr. Snyder

Although it's been documented that the earth is warming, I would like you
to explain how certain parts of the country such as the Northeast have
experienced record snowfall and record cold during the last couple of years.
These records seem to present a contradiction to the fact the the earth
is warming. Thank you, Thomas Jefferson

The weather conditions you refer to are localized. The earth as a whole
may be warming, yet some sections of the earth can experience localized
weather conditions that aren't consistent with the warming trend. Even
though we think of the "northeast" or any other section of the country
as a pretty large area, it is still relatively small compared to the earth
as a whole. The warming trend has to be looked at as an average warming
of the earth as a whole. Some regions will experience more rapid (localized)
warming, some will experience less rapid (localized) warming, and some
will actually experience (localized and transient) cooling as this general,
average warming trend progresses.
